Chinese Candied Fruit, Tanghulu
In Korea, a candied fruit from China, called Tanghulu, is becoming a popular snack.
This sweet treat consists of fruits that are covered with sugar syrup and served on a long stick.
Hawthorn berries, strawberries, and many other fruits can be used to make Tanghulu.
The syrup gives the hard shell covering the fruits with a crunchy texture and sweet taste.
In contrast, the fresh fruits inside offer a juicy texture and tart taste.
Not surprisingly, this mix of flavors and textures makes Tanghulu fun to eat.
In China, the snack is especially popular during the winter months.
The Chinese started eating Tanghulu around 1,000 years ago.
According to legend, an emperor’s companion fell ill, and her doctor instructed her to eat sugar-sweetened berry fruit for two weeks.
After she recovered, the doctor became famous.
Tanghulu contains healthy fruits, but the sugary shell can be bad for your teeth.
Don’t eat it too often.
